Our £ 13m Mental Health Developments for Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS were developed under the Procure 21 Framework, working with the Taylor Woodrow Team from November 2005.
Three buildings, in Hartlepool and Stockton, support the Trust’s new model of care for Adults, Older Adults, and people with Learning Disabilities, and their vision to create high quality, therapeutic accommodation for people with mental health problems.
The services provided are:
Hartlepool “Sandwell Park” 16 adult beds and 16 beds for older people,
Stockton “Lustrum Vale” 20 beds for older adults,
Stockton “The Dales” 10 beds for users with learning disabilities
Intrinsic to the success of the schemes was Stakeholder involvement. Workshops were held at key stages of the design with clinicians, staff, service users and carers contributing to development of the brief and healthcare planning, interior design and artwork for the buildings.
Primarily residential in scale, the buildings are fully accessible, and create views and access to safe outdoor space. A mix of traditional with modern materials creates a modern but homely and therapeutic environment supporting the Trust’s vision for future healthcare.
As part of the space planning and detail design stage, full-size mock-ups of the bedrooms and bathrooms were built, to ensure users had every opportunity to “road-test” the new facilities — particularly as the Trust was in the middle of the strategy for the replacement of St Luke’s Hospital — a new 300 bed mental health hospital.
