Rowanwood PICU
Working with Kier as part of the NHS’s ProCure 21 framework, P+HS has designed this in-patient psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) for people with acute mental health problems for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation. The scheme forms part of the Trust’s programme to modernise mental healthcare facilities in Cumbria, and supports the “needs led” service it aims to provide.
The refurbishment and extension were designed to replace dark, cramped conditions with light bright spaces, and single en suite facilities to respect the privacy and dignity of patients. Whilst facilities are secure and provide seclusion zones and a rapid response entrance, the building maintains the P+HS ethos of healing environments. The 10-bedded unit incorporates familiar non-institutional materials, ample natural light, and views and access to outdoor spaces.
The mix of traditional and modern materials creates a contemporary yet homely and welcoming atmosphere within a domestic scale, vastly improving patient experience and providing better facilities for both staff and visitors.
P+HS continues to work with the Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust for the reprovision of mental health services as it revises its model of service across the region. Other developments include Edenwood LDU also at Carleton Clinic and business case development for further improvements.
