Rowland founded P+HS Architects with Chris Potter in 1983 after working in private practice in London, North Yorkshire and Middlesbrough.
After returning to his native North Yorkshire in 1983, much of his work has been in the Residential Sector where he now leads the practice’s work with clients who include four of the ”˜Top 5’ national housebuilders and the major Housing Associations in the region.
Through this experience Rowland has built a detailed knowledge of residential design issues, and particularly those that influence decision making in the development industry. More importantly, he has developed a passion for residential design and specific interest in urban design and large scale masterplanning, and this is now reflected in the projects that the practice undertakes.
In particular, he has been keen to work with clients to address the relatively low standard of design in the residential sector, championing the case for design excellence with the major developers, showing how good design can translate down to ‘the bottom line’. Although he has a natural concern for the quality of the architecture in residential development, he places particular emphasis on the quality of public spaces within new development.
The success of this work is exemplified by the increasing breadth of the practice’s work in the housing sector, and by the number of projects that are that are won by the practice or secured for its clients through design competitions.
Within P+HS Architects, Rowland has responsibility for contractual, legal and insurance matters.
