Designing for Independence and Inclusivity
Designing for Independence and Inclusivity

As the UK’s aging population continues to grow, the need for high-quality, thoughtfully designed housing has never been more critical. During Housing LIN’s Festival of Ideas, Residential Lead Mark Heron delivered an engaging presentation titled “Designing Aspirational HAPPI Homes for Our Ageing Population.” His talk emphasised the importance of creating homes that not only cater to the physical needs of older people but also nurture a sense of community, independence, and overall well-being.
Mark’s talk drew from a recent visit to The Sycamores, which marked one year since the project's completion. During this visit, he spoke with residents and staff to gather firsthand feedback about the building’s performance and impact on their daily lives. The Sycamores, a purpose-built Extra Care scheme, has been designed to embrace intergenerational living and dementia-friendly principles, creating an inclusive community where residents can continue to live fulfilling, independent lives as they age.
The scheme’s design aligns with the recommendations of the Older People’s Housing Taskforce report, which emphasises the need for more high-quality, purpose-built accommodation across the UK. The Sycamores demonstrates how thoughtful design can positively influence well-being, promoting social interaction and supporting the diverse needs of residents.
Creating accessible and inclusive spaces requires a continuous commitment to innovation. As the demand for suitable housing grows, it remains essential to push the boundaries of design, ensuring that older-age housing evolves to meet the needs of the population.
