Planning Submitted for New Same Day Emergency Care Facility at Airedale General Hospital
26 March 2026
We're delighted to have submitted a planning application for a new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Mobility facility at Airedale General Hospital. The multi-specialist assessment unit will provide increased capacity for SDEC procedures and provide accommodation used by other specialist departments and teams. The aim is to avoid unnecessary admissions by streaming patients away from the Emergency Department for SDEC same-day assessments and treatments.
The proposals will deliver a new purpose built three storey building. This will be accessed via the north façade stair core and operate independently from the first floor. The first floor will accommodate a new dedicated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). This will be directly linked back to the existing Acute Assessment Unit building via a new dedicated first floor patient link.
The second floor will provide dedicated plant room and external plant space with photovoltaics.
Accessed via the existing loop road to the north of the site, accessible parking spaces will be provided here, together with hatched drop off and safe pedestrian link to the stair core entrance.
Occupying an exposed corner of the north-east part of the site, the concrete framed building presents a complementary scale and appearance. A neural tone of cladding articulates the stair core, bridge link, and rooftop plant whilst the main body of the building is dressed in varying profile types of metal cladding, designed to add interest through a contrasting play of shadow detail.
The development at Airedale General Hospital forms a crucial part of the Trust’s strategy to maintain safe patient flow while preparing for a new hospital. The SDEC also supports the wider clinical strategy and the NHS 10-Year Plan by shifting activity toward same‑day and community‑based care,
A huge congratulations to the Trust clinical teams, VINCI Building, and the wider design team in delivering the proposals under extremely tight timescales. The team commenced RIBA Stage 2 in December 2025 and anticipate commencing enabling works for the new build late Spring 2026.
