Remembering Rowland Holmes-Smith

It’s with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rowland Holmes-Smith.

In his early years, Rowland worked on the Barbican Arts Centre with Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, before returning to the North East and, in 1984, partnering with Chris Potter to form P+HS Architects.

Within P+HS, we are proud of the legacy created by Rowland and Chris, and we continue to grow and develop in line with the principles that they established.

Rowland was a life force within the organisation and the industry. He was a widely respected expert in residential architecture, leading on the design and delivery of large-scale masterplans and smaller scale developments.

His pin-sharp intellect, passion and commitment to projects meant that clients returned and our teams could develop and grow under his guidance. His expertise and knowledge were highly valued, and his career included time on regional design review panels as well as Secretary of the local RIBA branch.

Many of those that worked with Rowland have since gone on to be respected industry leaders themselves and therefore his highly-personal, yet academic, approach to projects continues within the next generation of residential designers.

The celebration of Rowland’s life will take place on Tuesday 16th June at

Kirkleatham Memorial Park and Crematorium at 2.30pm

Followed by a reception at Ingleby Greenhow village hall at 4.15pm

Best wishes to all the Holmes-Smith family and friends
