Second Planning Approval for Durham County Council's Housing Programme

The newly approved development at Greenwood Avenue, Burnhope, is the second of many as part of Durham County Council's ambitious programme aiming to deliver up to 500 new homes across the county in the coming years. This follows the first successful planning approval for the Malvern Crescent development in Seaham, marking an exciting start to the wider housing delivery initiative.

Providing 32 affordable and energy-efficient homes, the scheme has been praised for its high design quality, reinforcing our commitment to delivering sustainable, well-designed homes for local communities.

Thoughtfully planned, the development features bungalows to the north, oriented to create a small community space where residents can socialise, alongside open pockets of green space that promote a sense of place. These inviting areas encourage residents to pause, connect, and enjoy their surroundings. Additionally, existing trees and hedgerows have been preserved, while the inclusion of sustainable drainage basins serves a practical function and supports biodiversity conservation.

With enabling works set to start soon and the government’s announcement of further grant funding to support affordable housing through Homes England, we look forward to seeing these homes take shape, with the promise of more to come!
