On Site Poole Endoscopy Unit

P+HS have been working closely with University Hospital Dorset NHS Foundation Trust and Premier Modular Ltd to develop a new bespoke Endoscopy Facility at the Poole Hospital site. Through successful stakeholder engagement and close consultation with the clinical team at Poole Hospital we have successfully tailored clinical requirements and optimised the use of very constrained and complicated site.

The NHS has set out a clear commitment to transfer the delivery of diagnostic services by doubling CT and MRI capacity, planning 150 new Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) across the UK. The CDC plan for Dorset has been developed in line with the Dorset Services Review with a new CDC located at the Poole Hospital site. This will be a planned care site for University Hospitals Dorset, providing a minimum range of diagnostic tests.

The new facility will provide six new endoscopy rooms, plus the support space required for these rooms. The vacated endoscopy unit at the existing site will then be refurbished to become the expanded scope reprocessing unit. The existing ambulance station on Churchfield Road will be demolished and replaced with the new endoscopy facility. The unit will operate a six-day service offering 2 sessions per day. It is planned that the CDC will complete high volume diagnostics procedures with some treatment within the CDC. The new facility will also complement the existing unit at Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Off-site modular construction methods are being utilised to minimise disruption to hospital operations, allowing high standards of patient care to be maintained throughout the construction phase.

We look forward tracking the progression on site, with completion expected in Autumn 2025.

Site Analysis

Lots of physical barriers to the site directed our design approach to the available space, building positioning and access arrangements. The demolition of Park View House, significant level changes, mature trees and underground utilities forced site analysis studies to inform design decisions.

Concept

In developing the brief, it was obvious the Trust fully understood the site constraints through a space study exercise reflected in a detailed brief. This enabled the design team to quickly develop the concept proposals, and test solutions to optimise the best use of the site and accommodation needs.

External Appearance

Working closely with Premier Modular, we tested various options to help articulate the overall massing. A brickwork plinth to the lower level supports the upper-level clinical block. Deep punched windows help to enhance the street scene, at the same time providing natural light to administration and staff support space. The aspiration to address human scale was important and dealt with through subtle brickwork header projections between windows offering a layer of texture to the street. The upper level is dressed in a standing seam finish, set out on 45-degree angle to express the clinical floor as being separate from the plinth below. A splayed surround to the slot window helps to articulate and balance the elevation.
