Newcastle's Day Treatment Centre Commended for Value

The national finals of the Constructing Excellence Awards were held recently, and we were thrilled to see the Day Treatment Centre highly commended for value! This award category recognises projects that have focused on the value of facilities in use and the outcomes for owners and users.

The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s DTC is a great example of such positive outcomes, having been built in record time to address a real and pressing need to tackle elective care waiting lists in the wake of the pandemic.

Designed specifically to provide day case and elective surgery procedures, patients benefit from a high-quality treatment and care before returning home at the end of the day to their own familiar surroundings.

The innovative new centre treated 6500 patients in its first year since opening in September 2022, with a range of procedures and treatments carried out including musculoskeletal health, urology, general surgery, plastic surgery, neurology, pain management and some cardiology care.

As the centre celebrated its first anniversary, David Rix, consultant urology surgeon and clinical director of the day treatment centre said:

“People give us really good feedback about their experience here and it’s a great working environment for staff. Technology now allows a wider range of less complex procedures to be carried out as day cases, meaning patients can return home on the same day as they have their operation and recuperate in their own environment. Over the months, we’ve expanded the range of procedures we offer at the centre, to include gynaecology and endoscopy, and there are plans to provide even more options in the future.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Day Treatment Centre!
