Hexham General Hospital Redevelopment
Hexham General Hospital Redevelopment
Working with P22 Principal Supply Chain Partner IHP, redevelopment works at Hexham General Hospital for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are progressing well.
Delivered in phased stages, the project is enhancing facilities across the hospital to create a modern, welcoming environment for patients, families, and staff. Improvements include updated and reconfigured spaces for Maternity, Dentistry, Oncology, Endoscopy, and Operating Theatres.
Phase 1 – Maternity (Completed):
The first phase transformed a former ICU area into a new Maternity Department, featuring a welcoming reception, staff base, two flexible rooms, a birthing pool, and associated support spaces. The design focuses on promoting a calm and therapeutic atmosphere for patients and families.
Phase 2 – Dentistry, Endoscopy, and Oncology (Completed):
This phase will deliver modern clinical spaces for these key services, improving patient experience and operational efficiency.
Phase 3 – Operating Theatres (Completion Expected 2026):
The final stage will see the refurbishment of the hospital’s Operating Theatres, bringing the overall redevelopment to completion.
We are extremely proud of the redevelopment works at Hexham General Hospital. Our team and partners have delivered this complex refurbishment to an exceptional standard, working collaboratively with all stakeholders. The project has been recognised for its excellence, achieving multiple awards at the Constructing Excellence Awards 2025.
Phase 1 – Maternity
Speaking just prior to the new Maternity Unit opening to patients, Marion Dickson, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals said:
“This new and improved unit gives pregnant people across Hexham who choose to deliver at their local hospital a calm and relaxing place to do so. We know that getting the environment right directly correlates with a positive birthing experience and we are really proud of this space we have created - we can’t wait to open it up to our patients."
