Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre Imaging Suite
Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre Imaging Suite
Delivered in just 12 months, the new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) Imaging Suite at Montagu Hospital marks a significant step in enhancing Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s diagnostic capacity and its role as a centre for elective procedures.
The facility includes MRI and CT scanning suites, two ultrasound rooms, a bright and spacious waiting area, reception, and supporting clinical spaces. Now fully operational, the CDC is expected to enable up to 80,000 additional diagnostic appointments annually, more than doubling provision for local residents and helping to improve early diagnosis, health outcomes, and the overall patient and staff experience. A new standalone substation was also constructed as part of the scheme to support the wider hospital infrastructure.

The design was developed in close collaboration with clinical teams, estates staff, and key stakeholders to create a layout that is both highly functional and patient-centred. Each detail was carefully considered to create a calm and welcoming environment. A continuous ribbon motif aids intuitive wayfinding, aligning with the colour scheme across different suites, while the light-filled entrance and waiting area offer a positive first impression.
Inside, Visualite LED sky panels bring in natural daylight and scenic imagery to soften the clinical environment and reduce stress for those attending a diagnostic appointment. A large Digiclad wall graphic in the CT room further enhances the calming environment for both patients and staff. Meanwhile, patients undergoing MRI scans can watch a digital screen displaying soothing natural landscapes, helping to create a more comfortable experience.
“Patient experience is crucial to delivering an effective diagnostic service, and the new imaging suite has been designed with comfort in mind. The interiors feature calming murals and muted warm tones to create a welcoming environment.
“The MRI scanning room includes mood-enhancing lighting, and patients can preselect the scenery displayed inside the scanner to help provide a distraction during the procedure.” Sara Elliott, Head of Medical Imaging at DBTH
This project forms part of the Trust’s wider £100 million estate improvement programme and was successfully handed over by Integrated Health Projects (IHP) exactly one year from the start of construction.
