Celebrating Our Talented Future Architects

Last month some of the P+HS Architects team headed over to the end of year degree shows at Northumbria University and Leeds Beckett University to celebrate the incredible work of this year’s Architecture students, including five of our own!

It was fantastic to see such a diverse range of creative and thought-provoking projects on display and especially rewarding to see the achievements of our own talented team members.

Joe Clark 1

Joe Clark's master's thesis project, set in 2055, explores an organically grown landscape introduced into the Humber Estuary. Monstrous growths use programable cell technology to reimagine existing landscapes that are exposed during low tide but will eventually be lost due to sea level rise.

The artificial landscape will create a new and distinct environment that will mimic the critical habitats that estuary species rely on and will soon lose.

Phoebe Millard 20

Phoebe Millard's project introduces Echoes of Home: A Dementia Care Sanctuary in the Heart of Coventry, a sensitive architectural response to the city’s ongoing redevelopment. Set within Coventry’s modernist heritage and the £360 million City Centre South plans, the project addresses the urgent need for specialised dementia care. It envisions a calming, inclusive environment that supports dignity, cognitive stimulation, and emotional well-being for residents and their families.

In contrast to large-scale, demolition-led planning, the proposal offers a more humane and contextually rooted alternative, preserving local identity while meeting critical healthcare and community needs in the heart of the city.

Mikzong Gurung showcased his project on Coventry, a city rich in history and resilience. Once a medieval textile hub, it has evolved into a modern cultural centre, earning the title of UK City of Culture in 2021. Current redevelopment plans by Chapman Taylor include 25% social housing but fall short in addressing key community needs such as local shops and support for the homeless.

Mikzong’s proposal offers a more inclusive alternative: a space that supports local businesses, provides aid for the homeless, and reflects Coventry’s heritage and values. It’s a chance to create not just new buildings, but a stronger, more caring community.

Amelia 1 favourite

Amelia Swaby's work focused on harnessing the innate healing powers of nature to assist mental health and alcohol rehabilitation. Set in the idyllic landscape of Amble, Northumberland, ‘The Nature of Therapy’ brings together both urban and rural realms to ambitiously address the mental health crisis and provide a long-needed Solution to an ever-growing problem to support those suffering from anxiety, depression, and alcohol addiction.

With inspiration from Isabel Hardman’s Natural Health Service and Ben Channon’s Happy by Design principles, this scheme offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services, complimented by public areas to enhance community spirit and stamp out the stigma surrounding mental health.

Kate Baker's final masters project explores an innovative approach to tackling and breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health in the North East, by merging the proven benefits of art therapy with the healing properties of the sea.

The building design celebrates the stark contrast between the softness and fluidity of the surrounding land and seascapes against the robust industrial background which Teesside is known for. Each internal space orientates around the breath-taking views of Teesmouth, with the ground floor focusing on community and connectivity, and the lower ground floor providing an opportunity for personal reflection and solitude.
